Education
[edit]I have updated this article, particularly the education section and I am removing the line "The music department is run by Louise Doyle and Micheal Dalvean and recently came very close to winning the concert band Eisteddfod run in Darwin." as this does not belong in an encyclopedia! date
[edit]What date should be listed for the floods? The date it started or a range. This dated the 6th [1] is the earliest source I found on google news -- Astrokey44|talk 06:36, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- The date it started and the range/period for which it lasted should both be listed. Tomertalk 03:52, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
yea they both should. the problem is many places just outside the town centre flooded before the river rose enough to be a danger to the town centre, the date from which the flood was officaly reported.

contradiction
[edit]on this page it is first stated that the town is named after the river, then that it is named after the daughter of an explorer. which is true? stuarts daughters name begins with a c not a k. prehaps the vally/ river was named after his daughter, then as the town evolved, the name stuck?
RoNa_CaBiLlO--Ronacabillo 05:56, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- The K vs. C seems to have been a mistake of Stuart. History is muddy in that respect. However, the name comes from the river, and I removed the contradicting bit, and added a reference. 150.203.177.121 (talk) 04:45, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
"Third largest"
[edit]The lead of the article says that Katherine is the third largest settlement in the Territory, which I also believed to be true. However, http://www.katherine.nt.gov.au/ notes Katherine as the fourth largest. So, which one's true? And if they've got it right, is Nhulunbuy 3rd largest? I can't think of any other contenders. – Riana ⁂ 02:05, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe they're counting Palmerston as a separate entity. Nhulunbuy doesn't come close to Katherine (3800 vs. 8400 acc. to http://www.theterritory.com.au/index.php?menuID=178 ). 150.203.177.121 (talk) 04:34, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
cadel evans
[edit]i dont think this entry shows a neutral point of view,
"the outstanding racing cyclist, Cadel Evans, two times World Champion in mountain biking and first australian winner of the Tour de France, was born in Katherine in 14th February 1977."
211.27.151.29 (talk) 08:01, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
- But is it POV to mention that he won the Tour de France? Since this is generally considered to be a much more significant achievement than becoming a world champion I would say it is inappropriate (and probably POV) *not* to mention it. AlexFekken (talk) 08:55, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Population Stats
[edit]I noticed a recent edit [2] by User:Laterthanyouthink updated the population stats to the Census data for the Town of Katherine LGA. I have changed this back to the Urban Centre/Locality which covers the areas generally considered as the urban "town". I believe this is more accurate as the LGA covers an area of some 7400 square km and also incorporates the residential areas of RAAF Base Tindal, the outlying community of Binjari and sparsely populated rural localities like Manbulloo and Florina. Happy to discuss here if anyone has a different opinion! Dfadden (talk) 09:04, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- No, that's fine with me. I don't recall doing the change but it looks like I was trying to update the stats from 2016 and found the wrong one. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:17, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
